KASARAGOD: Treatment in government hospitals in the State would become costlier from April when the newly formed Kerala Medical Services Corporation Ltd. begins supply of medicines to government hospitals. The order of the State government which formed the corporation has limited distribution of medicines free of cost from government hospitals to persons belonging to BPL families only. Moreover, the rates finalised by the corporation for purchase of a majority of medicines are considerably higher than the rates existed when the central purchase committee (CPC) was entrusted with the task, said M.S. Rajeev Kumar, executive committee member of Kerala Government Pharmacists Association. The tenders were finalised by the corporation on March 20 after negotiations with various companies on March 19 and 20. Speaking to The Hindu here on Saturday, Mr. Kumar noted that the purchase rates finalised by the corporation for several medicines, including sutures used for operations, anti-cancer drugs and commonly used injections were higher than the rates at which CPC bought drugs earlier.
