1,950 group houses constructed so far

PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 1,950 group houses have been constructed in the district under the Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) during 2007-08, the Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathy said on Saturday.

Presiding over the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting here, Mr. Regupathy said a target has been fixed to construct 2,000 group houses under the IAY in the district during 2008-09.

As many as 343 work have been taken up under the rural drinking water scheme at a cost of Rs.11.30 crore to benefit 78,000 people.

Calling upon the local body representatives to provide the list of places facing drinking water problem, he said those areas would be included in the scheme.

Developmental work such as laying of cement roads, construction of library building and anganwadi centres and construction of ration shop building had been carried out in the current financial year under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana at a cost of Rs.16.12 crore.

Revolving fund to the tune of Rs.65.20 lakh had been disbursed to 652 self-help groups under the Swarna Jayanthi Gram Swarozgar Yojana during the current year.

He handed over cheques for Rs. 15,000 each to 41 beneficiaries under the ‘Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammayar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme and loans along with subsidy amounting to Rs. 11.85 lakhs to four women self-help groups on the occasion.

The Collector D. Uthirakkumaran, MLAs Udayam Shanmugam and S. Rajasekaran, District Revenue Officer G. Prakasam, administration officials and local body representatives participated.
