People from different communities celebrate Holi

Enthusiastic: A human pyramid is being formed to break a pot suspended at a height, as part of Holi celebrations in Dharwad on Saturday.

DHARWAD: In spite of sudden showers, it was a riot of colours in Dharwad on Saturday as members of different communities, including Muslims, participated in Holi celebrations.

Undeterred by the rain and tight security, people came out in the open to celebrate the festival of colours. They went from one locality to another greeting their friends and acquaintances and smearing “gulal” and other colours on them. Children armed with “pichkaris” and water guns welcomed them in almost every area.

Women and girls chose to celebrate the festival in their localities and only a few moved out in groups. Unmindful the rain, many youth went around in the city on motorbikes, honking horns. However, some of them were stopped by the police and let off with a warning.

At some places, especially in market areas, police personnel also, in a way, played Holi standing amid the revellers.

Children were out on the streets in the morning.

As the day passed by elders joined them in the celebrations.

There was a huge crowd at the converging point of Line Bazaar and Tikare Road where the “pot breaking competition”, an annual event, was held.

The crowd cheered the teams as they tried to build a human pyramid to reach the pot suspended by a rope at a height over the road. However, none of the teams succeed in their effort despite several attempts.

At the end, police personnel broke the pot with a long pole.

Although the district administration had banned sale and consumption of liquor, many revellers were found in an inebriated state.

In Hubli, Holi was celebrated only in a few localities including Gokul village on the outskirts of the city. People in most of the areas in Hubli will celebrate the festival on Tuesday.
