Bangalore: The former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh has called upon people to work together for the development of Kannada and Urdu. He was speaking after presenting the Karnataka Urdu Academy’s annual awards for 2007, Suvarna Karnataka awards and book prizes for 2005, 2006 and 2007 here on Saturday. Urdu, along with many other languages, had brought people together from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. It was imperative that languages be used to blend cultures and human relationships. Urdu-speaking people in the State should learn Kannada as well in the larger interests of the State, Mr. Singh said. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, founder of the Al-Ameen Movement, said that he had studied in Tamil medium and not in Urdu as many thought. However, Urdu was not getting due recognition in the field of education, he said. The academy honoured the Vice-Chancellor, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, A.M. Pathan, with the lifetime achievement award.
