College praised for role in women’s education

Special Correspondent

Gets accreditation for the second time

One third of India’s adult population is illiterate

IGNOU making efforts to take education to all strata

CHENNAI: A re-accreditation certificate with A Plus grading for Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women was presented by V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pillai said with 18,000 colleges and 400 universities in the country only less than 10 per cent of the students get into higher education.

He appealed to the students to help educate children.

Lauding the efforts of the institution, Dr. Pillai said the college adopted a holistic approach towards women’s education in the last 53 years. It was for the second time the college got accreditation, he said.

Not even 5 per cent of the colleges in the country were awarded the Five Star status. Only 4 per cent of the total accredited institutions in the country were awarded A Plus grading.

For achieving this, colleges should have a good ‘Internal Quality Assurance Cell,’ he said.

Providing education and empowering women should be the thrust of any developing nation. Any society where women’s education was focussed would always achieve positive growth, Dr. Pillai said. One third of India’s adult population was illiterate despite several measures by the Central and State Governments, he said.

Moosa Raza, chairman, S.I.E.T. Trust said the education system of the open universities helped the underprivileged to obtain degrees.

Similarly the IGNOU was taking all efforts to take education to all strata of society, he said.

Dr. Pillai also distributed trophies to university toppers.

Faizur Rahman Sayeed, Correspondent, Dr. Sanjida Haris, principal of the college, were among those who spoke.
