PM to lay foundation of Bawana plant

Staff Reporter

To be commissioned before the Games

Gas to be supplied by Petronet LNG

Received clearance from Environment Ministry

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lay the foundation stone for the 1,600-MW Pragati Phase III gas-based power plant at Bawana in North-West Delhi this Monday.

The plant, which is expected to be commissioned before the commencement of the Commonwealth Games in 2010, is aimed at decreasing Delhi’s dependence on other sources for meeting its power needs.

The gas-based combined cycle project will be supplied gas by Petronet LNG and agreements have been signed with Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Gas Authority of India Ltd and Indian Oil Corporation for supply of two million standard cubic metres of gas per day for running the plant.

The Delhi Cabinet had initially approved the establishment of a 1,000-MW gas-based power project at Bawana in 2004. In 2007, taking cognisance of the high nitrogen oxide levels at the Capital’s ITO crossing, the State Government decided to shift the 350-MW Pragati power project to Bawana and integrate it with the 1,000-MW Pragati power plant.

The plant’s capacity was later enhanced to 1,600 MW. Pragati III at Bawana has received clearance from the Union Environment Ministry and will ensure minimum emission of harmful nitrogen oxides.

According to officials in the Delhi Government’s Power Department, GAIL is working towards laying another natural gas pipeline project from Vijaipur to Dadri and from Dadri to Bawana by January 2010.
