Undertake relief works: CPI

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: State secretary of the Communist Party of India D. Pandian has appealed to the government to undertake relief works in rain-affected areas on a war-footing.

In a statement here on Saturday, Mr. Pandian said a majority of districts in the State were affected by the rains. Paddy, ready for harvest, were submerged and cash crops in delta districts completely damaged.

There were reports that farmers who had cultivated cotton, groundnut and plantains suffered heavily.

Huts belonging to Adi Dravidars had collapsed. The government should come to the rescue of farmers and rain-affected people by providing sufficient relief, the CPI leader said.

Mr. Pandian also appealed to party workers to undertake relief works in their areas.
