NEW DELHI: If all the deadlines are met, passengers will be greeted with an expanded and improved Arrivals area in the domestic wing of Indira Gandhi International Airport here by this coming June.

Congestion inside the Arrivals is likely to come down considerably as the area will stand expanded from the existing 8,220 square metres to 12,000 square metres.

The number of conveyor belts will also be increased to eight from the five in operation now. The commercial area inside the Arrivals will be expanded from 300 sq. m. to 2,000 sq. m. However, space for all the airline offices will be reduced from 1,100 sq. m at present to only 450 sq. m.

To increase the space in the Arrivals terminal, the building is being expanded to the north towards the existing terminal 1B.

“This will allow an increase in the baggage claim area which would ensure that passengers are able to retrieve their baggage quickly,” said an official of Delhi International Airport Limited that manages the IGI airport.

Once the expansion work is complete and the terminal is ready, arriving passengers would enter the renovated arrival concourse through entry gates on the airside and then proceed directly to the baggage claim areas.

Under the Arrivals expansion plan, work is under progress and 66 per cent of footings and column erection work for a landside canopy has been done. Work is also on track for the G plus 5 parking lot right in front of the domestic Arrivals terminal with a capacity to park over 3,000 cars. This multi-storey parking lot should be ready by January, the official added.

Meanwhile, construction of a VIP parking facility in front of Terminal 1A and a ramp for the new VIP gate has been completed.

Work for connecting the road in front of the domestic Arrivals terminal and modification of the airport roundabout near the petrol pump has also been completed, the official informed. The pre-paid taxi boarding area has recently become functional near the Arrivals where free porter service and pre-paid cabs are being provided to passengers.
