KOCHI: Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that the government plans to start handicrafts and heritage villages. Workers of traditional industries would bring out innovative products and souvenirs, he said, after inaugurating the Second International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations, here on Friday. He said that a Rs.7.2-crore art and crafts village at Vizhinjam and a Rs.6-crore crafts village at Irringal in Kozhikode were planned. The village-based projects planned were a handloom-based project at Azhikode in Kannur (Rs.5 crore); Subhiksha coconut product-based project at Perambra in Kozhikode (Rs.7 crore); pottery-based venture at Nilambur (Rs.2 crore); handloom-based project at Thiruvillwamala in Thrissur (Rs.4.50 crore); coir-based unit at Muhamma in Alappuzha (Rs.3.50 crore); handloom-based unit at Manchavilakam in Thiruvananthapuram (Rs.4.50 crore) and a unit at Sugandhagiri in Wayanad (Rs. 4 crore).
