Exemption sought from internship

Kochi: The Kerala Students Union (KSU) on Saturday demanded that the 2003 batch students of the Mahatma Gandhi University School of Medical Education, who completed their nursing course in 2007, be exempted from internship.

Addressing a press conference, KSU president Hibi Eden said that when the students joined the course in 2003, there was no stipulation that they should do internship in hospitals.

It was only in 2004 that the government issued an order insisting on nursing students to do a one-year internship in government medical colleges.

The university had asked the students to do internship at the Amrita Hospital for one year on the basis of this order.

He said that the order was not applicable to the 2003 batch students.

In fact, even the Indian Nursing Council wanted the nursing students to do internship only for six months.

He pointed out that the university was yet to publish the result of the BSc nursing final year examination.

The students had taken loans for their education from banks.

They were bound to pay back the money six months after the completion of the course. The indifference of the university had put the students in a difficult situation, he said.
