TAMBARAM: The advances in military and technological developments had revolutionised war doctrines, yet it was “effective leadership” that was the most important factor to emerge victorious, Lieutenant General (Retired) Bhopinder Singh, Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar and Puducherry, said on Saturday. Speaking to 266 men and women who were inducted into various regiments of the Indian Army after a passing out parade at Officers Training Academy in St. Thomas Mount, he said the application of sophisticated technology had advanced by leaps and bounds. However, only effective leadership could ensure victory and it was up to the young officers to acquire these qualities and skills required for it, the Lt. Gov. Bhopinder Singh said. India was facing plenty of insurgency problems in Kashmir and the Northeast, but the youth had risen to the occasion to face the challenges. “The country is expecting a more important challenging role from young officers owing to the changed security environment and external threat to the country had assumed new forms through global terrorism,” Lt. Gov. Bhopinder Singh said. Bio terrorism and nuclear terrorism were emerging as new possible threats, he said. “Many young officers have shown exemplary courage and bravery and have sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country,” he remarked. And to keep themselves ahead, the new recruits of Indian Army and young officers should update themselves with the latest trends in warfare and developments in military affairs to emerge as effective leaders, Lt. Gov. Bhopinder Singh said. A total of 161 men and 105 women completed 11 months and six months of training respectively and formally joined the Army after a meticulous parade at Major Parameshwaran Drill Square amidst a drizzle. Anshuman Patil received the Sword of Honour for best all round Gentleman Cadet. Sumer Singh, who was the parade commander, received the Gold Medal for standing first in overall order of merit. Preeti Pooniya and P. Priyadarshini won the Gold and Silver Medals respectively for standing first and second in the order of merit among Lady Cadets in the Women’s Special Entry Scheme. Jessami Company won the Chief of Army Staff and Commandant’s Banners for best overall Company.
