Teachers pool money to buy bicycles for pupils

PRECIOUS GIFT: The students of Sri Ramkrishna High School of Hiriyur taluk with their bicycles

Chitradurga: In an age when private schools make no bones about profiteering, Sri Ramakrishna High School of Hiriyur taluk stands apart.

Teachers of this school have set an example for their fraternity in other schools who cry for government aid to provide better facilities to the students.

Some nine teachers of the school have taken up the cause of helping the poor students. They have contributed money to provide bicycles to about 10 poor schoolchildren. They are contributing for midday meal, uniforms and textbooks to some 91 children studying in the school. School headmaster R.C. Umesh said the children in government schools get bicycles and midday meal, but the same was not given to those in unaided schools.

“We did not want our students to feel neglected. So we decided to contribute to purchase bicycles for the poorest children in the school,” he said. The teachers contributed around Rs. 2,500 each to purchase bicycles by identifying 10 children in the school.

Many children mainly come from rural areas and could not afford uniforms and textbooks. “Realising this, we thought of giving uniforms and text books to them. We set aside Rs. 600 a month from our salary,” Mr. Umesh said.

“If we ask the students to buy books and uniform, they may stop coming to school,” said Kannada teacher Sridhar.

The school hopes to be approved for aid this year.
