Chitra for World 9-ball pool

BANGALORE: Chitra Magimairaj, the current 9-ball pool National champion, is the lone Indian representative in the World 9-ball pool qualifying event in Taipei starting on March 30.

Sponsored by Tata Sons Ltd., Chitra will leave for Manila on Sunday night for a week-long coaching stint under renowned coach Jorge C. Dacer. He was the National coach ahead of the Doha Asian Games.

“I’m upbeat. With Tata Sons coming forward with this sponsorship, which will continue for the World snooker from May 3 at Cambridge and also the World billiards later in May, I don’t have to run from pillar to post to arrange for the money and instead can concentrate and plan on my practice schedules and game. I’m indebted to the media for this support,” Chitra said ahead of the trip.

Meenal Thakur, the National runner-up and Vidya Pillai dropped out due to lack of sponsorship.

Chitra is a two-time World women’s billiards champion and claimed the 8-ball pool title at the Jallandhar Nationals in 2006.

The qualifiers will be held at the Cue Masters Pool Club in Taipei from March 30 to April 1 and the World Championships at the Taipei Exhibition Centre from April 3 to 6. — Special Correspondent
