BERHAMPUR: The agitation for a permanent High Court bench at Berhampur in South Orissa has suffered a setback with two district bar associations pitching in for the bench in their respective headquarters. While the Ganjam Bar Association has been agitating for more than 100 days demanding establishment of a High Court bench in the city, similar demands have also started to emerge from other parts of South Orissa. Lawyers of Jeypore in Koraput district have demanded a high court bench at Jeypore. In a similar way the Rayagada Bar Association has changed its earlier stand and has started to propagate the view that Rayagada town would be the best place for the establishment of a High Court bench in south Orissa. Just a few months back lawyers of southern districts of Orissa have got together to start agitation for establishment of a permanent bench of the high court in Berhampur. In October last year representatives of lawyers of eight districts of south Orissa met in Berhampur under the banner of South Orissa Lawyers’ Association and decided to join hands for the agitation in support of demand for the high court bench. The Ganjam Bar Association was given the duty to spearhead the agitation as all agreed that Berhampur was the place for the High Court bench. An action committee of the South Orissa Lawyers’ Association was also formed then with 116 members. Former general secretary of the Gnajam Bar Association, Manoj Patnaik alleged that a conspiracy was now going on to weaken the demand for high court benches in Berhampur and for western Orissa through demands for the benches from multiple places. Similar tactics were used to weaken the agitation in Western Orissa and it was being used in south Orissa also, he alleged. He said senior lawyers of Ganjam Bar Association would soon start the process the reunite the lawyers of south Orissa.
