BHUBANESWAR: In an attempt to familiarise the city folks with different folk art traditions of the State and provide the much-needed patronage to the marginalised artistes, the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi has initiated a series of events recently. Akademi secretary M.N. Satpathy told The Hindu that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the city-based Regional College of Management to host a series of festivals for the dying art forms in the capital. “Invasion of modern means of entertainment has taken a toll of the rich folk arts of Orissa. Thus, the Akademi’s attempt has been to provide patronage to the practitioners of these endangered styles,” he explained and added that the performances were being duly documented. The first festival of the series that featured six such folk dance, music and theatre styles received rave response from the audience here, Mr. Satpathy informed. In the second phase of the Akademi’s new initiatives for popularisation of folk art styles, a State-level folk dance festival was hosted in the far off Sunabeda town recently, the secretary said, and added that similar events were being planned for other towns of the State. “We are trying to make these festivals interactive so that the traditional and contemporary artistes learn from each other,” Mr. Satpathy explained.
