This may bring cheer to Arkavathy allottees

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Putting the fiasco of Arkavathy Layout behind it, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is all set to form a new layout at Kengeri. But the 20,000-odd people who have been allotted sites in the layout, mired in litigation, have had a long wait since 2003.

There could be a ray of hope though. On Saturday, BDA Commissioner H. Siddaiah told presspersons that the allottees of the Arkavathy Layout “could get preference when the new layout is formed.”

He further said that the formation of the Kempe Gowda layout would come in handy for the BDA which had not been able to meet the demand for sites for years now.

The layout, recently approved by the State Executive Committee, is to be developed on 4,814 acres at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,700 crore. As many as 60,000 sites and 20,000 houses for the economically weaker sections are to be formed.

On the Arkavathy Layout, Mr. Siddaiah said the BDA was “exploring the possibility of filing a memo” to see if the judgment pending in the Supreme Court, could be expedited.

On when the process of acquiring land for the new layout would begin, Mr. Siddaiah said that it would start only when the State Government approved the scheme under which it was being developed.

“To pre-empt any land acquisition problems, we are making farmers, who are losing their lands, partners in development of sites. Out of every 100 sites we develop, 40 will be given to farmers. Once this is approved, we will start the process of land acquisition,” he said.
