ALL SMILES: Playback singer S. Janaki and Actor Rajasulochana posing for photographs after being presented with Madhavapeddi Satyam and Madhavapeddi Prabhavathi Awards at a function in Chennai on Friday.

CHENNAI: She began her address with the famous song of Madhavapeddi Satyam ‘Kalyana Samayal Saadham’ in a perfect male tenor. The next song she sang was in her own sweet voice.

Versatile singer S. Janaki, who was honoured with the Madhavapeddi Satyam Award by the Siva Foundation here on Friday, recalled how she had performed at the wedding of playback singer Madhavapeddi Satyam.

“Retain purity of dance”

Actor and dancer Rajasulochana, who was presented with the Madhavapeddi Prabhavathi Award, urged dancers to retain the purity of the dance forms that they choose.

Playback singer S.P. Balasubramaniam, who was the chief guest at the function, recalled how Ms. S. Janaki was responsible for his entry into the film industry. “I was a college student then and after she heard me sing, she asked why I shouldn’t consider joining films. And with God’s grace, I am the only singer to have sung the most number of songs with her,” he said.

Industrialist Nalli Kuppuswami Chetty said Janaki’s service to music was incomparable.

The Foundation also presented awards to vocalist O.S. Arun, Kuchipudi dancer Vempati Ravi Shankar (the son of Vempati Chinna Satyam), music composer R. Devarajan, dancer Jayapriya Vikraman, mega serial director Dande Koteswara Rao, Kathak dancers Hari and Chethana and Odissi dancer Archana.

Siva Foundation founder Madhavapeddi Murthy, foundation vice-president C. Rajan Babu, secretary V. Lakshmi Ravikumar, playback singer P.B. Sreenivos, actors Srikanth, Anjalidevi and Sharadha and former Doordarshan Director A. Natarajan were present.

CD release

A CD titled Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara, composed by music director A.R. Devarajan was released. Singers including S.P. Balasubramanian, Veeramani Raju and S.N. Surendar have lent their voices.
