THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Intermittent heavy showers on Saturday evening caused water logging in several low-lying areas in the city, including East Fort, Pazhavangadi and Thampanoor. By nightfall the canals that crisscross the city were in spate. Personnel of the Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the Bund Colony at Kannammoola at 1 a.m. on Sunday following reports of flood water entering some huts by the side of the canal there. According to the Met office the city soaked in 49.1 mm of rain between 5.30 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. on Saturday. In the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Saturday the city received 63.7 mm of rainfall. Flashes of lightning that accompanied the showers caused power stations and transformers in various parts of the city to trip repeatedly. For instance, the power supply to several parts of the city was disrupted shortly after 11 p.m. when lightning caused the KSEB’s Thirumala sub-station to trip.
