THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Officials of the district administration who arrived at the British Library here on Saturday to inspect and take stock of the assets had to return after the library authorities failed to turn up and open the building for inspection. Acting on a direction from the High Court, Additional District Magistrate Sivarajan Nair and Tahsildar Krishnakumar arrived at the library premises. They found the building locked. The security men on duty informed them that the key had been sent to the British Council office in Chennai. Mr. Nair said the library building was located on prime land that was leased to the YMCA. “The YMCA had sub leased the building to the British Council. As the lease term is coming to an end, the government decided to recover the property. The YMCA moved the High Court against the move. The court, after hearing the case, directed the district administration to inspect the assets and prepare an inventory. On receiving the direction, we sent notice to the library manager and assistant librarian to be present at the premises. But both of them could not be contacted on Friday. Their houses were found locked.” Mr.Nair said the district administration had posted men in the premises to prevent the building from being opened.
