Kochi: The action council against the move to reopen the closed toddy shops in Cheranelloor panchayat has said that it will strongly oppose any such move. At a press conference here on Saturday, Annie Joseph, convener of the council, said all the toddy shops were closed down following an agitation launched by women in the panchayat. She said that 16 years back, the coastal area had more toddy shops than ration shops. Housewives could get a meagre amount for household expenses from their husband who were mainly working as manual labourers or engaged in fishing as major part of their hard-earned income were spent in toddy shops. The women had to suffer a lot. It was in these circumstances that the residents of the area had launched an agitation against the toddy shops.
