Heavy showers lash city

Special Correspondent

Paddy harvest affected in some places, say farmers

TIRUCHI: Several parts of Tiruchi district continued to receive moderate rain on Saturday.

The city received heavy showers earlier in the morning and overcast conditions prevailed right through the day.

Though there was no report of any major damage to crops, farmers said that harvest of the paddy crop in certain parts of Pullampadi union and other places had been affected. Farmers feared a drop in yield in pulses, owing due to the unseasonal rains.

Collector T. Soundiah inspected agricultural fields at several villages in Pullampadi union, including Irudhayapuram, Pullampadi North and South, Venkatachalapuram and also at Alangudi Mettur, Viragalur, Alampakkam and Pudupalayam.

Farmers in some of the villages urged him to ensure that the paddy arrivals at the direct purchase centres were procured promptly.

He instructed the Agriculture Department to conduct a survey to identify crop damage, if any. He also instructed revenue officials to take relief measures.

Lalgudi MLA A. Soundarapandian and officials accompanied the Collector.
