Pillion rider killed

R. Sujatha

CHENNAI: A 24-year-old pillion rider, Pratap Prasanna, was killed in an accident on Chennai Tiruvallur High Road in Tirumullavoyal Saturday evening.

The two-wheeler rider, Rajadurai, had applied brakes to prevent hitting a cow that suddenly ran across the road. Mr. Pratap was thrown off the vehicle and a lorry that was closely following the two-wheeler ran over him, the police said.

The driver, who sustained injuries, was admitted to hospital. The victims were residents of Gandhi Nagar in Pattabhiram. Roy Rozario, general secretary of People’s Voice, said lack of central medians and electricity and telephone poles by the side of the 25-foot road made driving difficult. The municipal chairman had presented a proposal for putting up a permanent median, he said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar who visited the spot told The Hindu that stones had been laid on a three-km stretch in the road as a temporary central median. Permanent medians would be installed once the road was widened, he said.
