“Move towards sustainable farming”
Staff Reporter
COIMBATORE: When the stock market goes up, it is considered a boom. But, when the price of agricultural products rises, it is considered as inflation. This is because the produce of the farmer goes into the basket of the essential commodities, Surjit K. Choudhary, Agricultural Production Commissioner and Agricultural Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, said here on Saturday.
Speaking at the inauguration of a four-day workshop on ‘Zero Budget Farming’ organised jointly by Siruthuli and Coimbatore Farmers’ Association, he urged farmers to consider their profession not as a service but as a commercial venture.
“When the Green Revolution happened it was required as it was an emergency. Now we do not require another revolution. We only need our farmers to move towards sustainable farming,” the Secretary said. Inaugurating the workshop, industrialist N. Mahalingam voiced his dissent against genetically modified crops and farming done based on chemical fertilizers.
