Trescothick ends his international career

P. Subramanyam

LONDON: England and Somerset opening batsman Marcus Trescothick, announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday.

The 32-year-old has been suffering from a stress-related illness, which made it impossible for him to travel abroad and was unable to endure the difficulties.

Trescothick has not played for England since August 2006 and had pulled out of tours of India and Australia rather abruptly.

He had declared then that he was not in a rush to return to international duty, saying, “my life is more important than playing cricket. One thing I won’t do is sacrifice my health.”

His troubles originally surfaced in India in February 2006 when he sat out a Championship Trophy game but returned to action that summer against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

He did admit after those uncomfortable tours that he still did not feel right and mentally fit to carry on.

However, the left-hander enjoyed a successful season with Somerset in 2007, scoring 1,000 runs in a county championship season for the first time as it won promotion to the top division.

The former England opener, who played in 76 Tests and 123 One-Day Internationals, said he was retiring now so that England could plan its future.

He said: “It is in the best interests of all concerned that the issue is put to rest, so that England team can concentrate on moving forward.”
