NEW DELHI: A dozen people were killed and almost double that number injured in a series of accidents across the Capital as roads turned into virtual death-traps over the weekend.

The injured included Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, R.S.P. Sinha, whose Baleno was involved in an accident with a Honda Civic at Moti Bagh on Sunday morning.

The first major accident of the day was reported at Punjabi Bagh. Four persons were killed and as many injured when the driver of a mini-truck, Shambhu Yadav (40), apparently dozed off at the wheel and the vehicle overturned at a traffic intersection on Sunday morning. “The vegetable-laden truck was coming from Azadpur Mandi carrying about two dozen people when the tragedy struck. While Babu (16) and Mohammed Hussain (20), both natives of Uttar Pradesh, died on the spot, Mohammed Ishaq (42) and Ajay (16) succumbed to their injuries at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. One of the four injured was discharged after first-aid,” said Om Prakash, a relative of one of the victims.

In another horrific accident, a Maruti Swift collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw on DND flyover on Saturday afternoon killing three people on the spot and injuring four. The injured were taken to Kailash Hospital and their condition is said to be critical.

“Three of the four persons travelling in the auto-rickshaw died on the spot and have been identified as Raghubir, Shailender and Azad. The occupants of the car are residents of neighbouring Noida. The cause of accident will be ascertained only after the victims’ statements are recorded,” said a senior police officer.

On the same flyover, three men were killed and seven sustained injuries when a Swaraj Mazda mini-truck burst into flames near Maharani Bagh on Saturday.

“The dead have been identified as Dharmender, Mannu and Vipin. The injured have been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. Driver Jaiveer, who had fled after the accident site, was later arrested,” said a senior police officer.

In yet another accident on Sunday afternoon, involving a Blueline bus, 50-year-old Sheila was killed and nine suffered injuries when the bus plying between Kapashera and Kashmere Gate ISBT rammed into a tree near Nirvachan Sadan on Ashok Road. The injured were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where Sheila, a resident of Kurukshetra in Haryana, succumbed to her injuries. Bus driver Ali Mohammed has been arrested on charges of causing death due to rash and negligent driving.

Later in the evening, an unidentified motorcyclist was killed and two critically injured in a head-on collision with another two-wheeler at Bawana.
