VISAKAHAPATNAM: A two-day national seminar on ‘Environmental protection – Climate security (low carbon futures)’ will be conducted by the local chapter of the Association of British Scholars (ABS) in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to ABS secretary A. Rajendra Prasad, the national seminar, in collaboration with British Council, Chennai, is being conducted as part of the International Year of the Planet Earth observed this year. There would be five technical sessions and special theme presentations from leading scientists.

A special session with participatory involvement of NGOs would be held on Wednesday afternoon to launch the awareness initiatives.

“Climate change was once simply described as global warming but the changes have gone far beyond temperature alone and are mostly attributed to changes in the angle of earth axis and eccentricity of the earth’s orbit and precession of equinoxes. Such changes lead to solar radiation received by the Earth. The sunspot activity, volcanisity, changes in atmospheric composition and the energy balance between hydrosphere and the atmosphere are casual factors.

Climate change affects landed gradation, leads to water scarcity and fall in crop productivity through changes in temperatures from 1.8 degree Celsius to four degree Celsius now than in the past,” he observed.

Devastation

Dr. Rajendra Prasad also said that in the next 25 years, three lakh people might die every year in the world due to devastation resulting from global warming. The impact of climate change on agriculture was worldwide including in India.
