Award for conservation

NEW DELHI: The Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) will announce the Dr. T.N. Khoshoo Memorial Award for Conservation for 2008 at a function at India International Centre here on Monday. Noted scholar Ramachandra Guha will deliver the T. N Khoshoo Memorial Lecture following the award ceremony at which senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh will be the chief guest.

JNU Chancellor Yash Pal; Ministry of Environment and Forests Secretary Meena Gupta and Development Alternatives president Ashok Khosla are also slated to speak at the function.

The award consists of a citation and a cash prize. The Khoshoo Memorial Endowment Fund was set up by ATREE to honour the memory of the great scientist and visionary T.N Khoshoo. As the first Secretary for the Central Department of Environment, he was responsible for developing India’s environment policy. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1992. The objective of the Khoshoo Memorial Award and Lecture is to recognise and honour one or more relatively young individuals in the field of conservation and sustainable development.
