Lightning claims four lives in Gulbarga

Life hit: Incessant rain forced most people to remain indoors in Gulbarga on Sunday.

GULBARGA: Unseasonable rain in the past two days has wreaked havoc in the district.

Standing crops in many parts of the district have been damaged and four persons died after lightning struck them.

Official sources told The Hindu here on Sunday that the paddy crop, which was ready for harvest in Shahapur, Surpur, Jewargi and Yadgir had been damaged owing to the rain. Officials of the Agriculture and Revenue departments were assessing the loss.

The sources said that the rain had damaged the standing chilli crop in the irrigated belt of Shahapur, Surpur, Jewargi and Yadgir.

Loss

In Shahapur and Yadgir, cotton growers had suffered losses as the rain had rendered the harvested cotton useless.

Growers had lost their grape crop in the rain in Gulbarga and Aland taluks, the sources said. Quoting reports, the sources said that six houses had been damaged in incessant rain.

Three houses in Hallisagar, two in Shahapur and one in Shahabad had been damaged, the sources said.

Two persons died after lightning struck them at Gondenur in Shahapur taluk on Saturday. They had been identified as Renuka Mallappa (15) and Basavanagouda Sharabagouda (35).

Two persons were injured in the incident, the sources said.

At Jidga village in Aland taluk, Shashikant Khatrabad (14) died when lightning struck him on Saturday. One person from the village was injured.

Yeshwant (28) died when lightning struck him at Son village in Jewargi taluk on Sunday.

Two persons from the village were injured, the sources said.

Four killed in Raichur

Raichur Staff Correspondent writes:

Four persons, including a child and three women, died and several huts were destroyed as heavy rain lashed Raichur district on Saturday.

According to reports received here, a boy died on the spot when lightning struck him at Chandrabanda near Raichur.

A woman was electrocuted in the Station Area in Raichur.

Another woman was electrocuted while she was sleeping in her hut at Yergera village near here on Saturday, the reports said.

In another rain-related incident reported from Manvi taluk, a woman drowned while she was crossing an overflowing “nalah” at Hiredinni village.

The reports stated that rainwater entered nearly 550 huts and some houses in Raichur and some villages in Sindhanur and Lingsugur taluks.

Rainwater entered nearly 250 huts at Jalalnagar, Sartigeri and N.M. Colony in Raichur.

Twenty 20 huts had been damaged.

Rainwater entered about 250 huts in three villages in Sindhanur taluk and 50 huts in Hutti village of Lingsugur taluk.

Huts destroyed

Seven huts were destroyed in Kasbe Camp near here. Crops such as chilli, jowar, Bengal gram and paddy grown in Manvi and Deodurga taluks had been affected, the reports said.
