SHIMOGA: The State unit secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sureshkumar on Sunday asked the municipal councillors of his party to take up need-based programmes and aim to provide basic civic amenities to people. Speaking as the chief guest at a function organised by the city BJP unit to felicitate the party’s councillors and also to thank the citizens for helping the party come to power in the municipal council, he said that the councillors should make the city municipal council a model civic body in the State. Mr. Sureshkumar asked them to put in efforts to avoid misuse or misapplication of funds. Unique programmes
He suggested that unique programmes be launched by the municipal council to serve the people effectively. Mr. Sureshkumar likened the implementing officials to a horse and told the party councillors to “ride” them properly. “Otherwise you will be taken for a ride,” he said. Efficient governanceHe pointed out that the BJP had always risen to the popular expectations whenever it was provided an opportunity to administer the civic bodies. If Surat in Gujarat, which was one of the filthiest cities in the country, was turned into a model city in a short period it was because of the efficient municipal governance provided by the BJP, he said. Municipal president M. Shankar presided over the function. The former Ministers K.S. Eshwarappa and D.H. Shankarmurthy, and president of the district BJP unit Girish Patel spoke. S.N. Channbasappa welcomed the gathering.
