Sarvodaya Karnataka to contest for 40 seats

Farm loan waiver an ‘election gimmick’

CHIKMAGALUR: Kodihalli Chandrashekar, working president of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS), said here on Sunday that Sarvodaya Karnataka, the political front of his organisation, was willing to enter into an electoral understanding with regional parties and like-minded organisations in the coming Assembly elections.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Chandrashekar said his party would contest for 30 to 40 seats. He did not rule out negotiations with the Left parties and the Janata Dal (Secular).

Lashing out at the Union Government for its “anti-farmer” policies, he described the farm loan waiver announced in the Budget as an “election gimmick”. He said it would benefit only a small number of farmers in the State. Stressing the need to waive all farm loans and prevent private moneylenders from recovering advances made to farmers, he criticised the Government for trying to divide the farmers based on the size of their holdings.

Pointing out that the Government was able to introduce several “anti-farmer” policies taking advantage of the lack of unity among farmers, he alleged the Government had devised several ways to deprive farmers of their land. Reiterating that the sangha was prepared to fight against the industrial and economic policies of the Government, he said the budgets presented by the Centre and the State governments were detrimental to interests of those living in rural areas.

H.R. Basavarajappa, general secretary of KRRS, said loan waivers would not have been necessary if the farmers had received scientific prices for their produce.M. Manjunath, secretary of the State unit of the KRRS, was among those present. The first meeting of workers of the district unit of the united KRRS was held.
