BELLARY: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has underlined the need for all secular forces to come together to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from coming to power in the State. Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, S. Prasannakumar, member of the CPI(M) State Secretariat, said that elections to the Assembly were round the corner and that his party was chalking out strategies to defeat its opponent. It was also in touch with other political parties which believed in secularism, he added. Claims ridiculedRidiculing the claims made by some BJP leaders that the State would be developed on the lines of Gujarat if it came to power, Mr. Prasannakumar said this only meant greater incidence of communal riots. “Gujarat is known as a commercial centre, which is why it has developed so far. It has nothing to do with the BJP,” he said. The Sangh Parivar had been making efforts to convert Hampi into a communally active area, he charged, and expressed hope that the people of the State would reject such tendencies. He appealed to the people not to fall prey to the “electoral baits” of the BJP, stating that it posed a serious threat to democracy in the country. He said the CPI(M) had decided to contest in 12 Assembly constituencies in the State.
