The message this year is ‘I am also participating in the TB control campaign,’ District TB Officer T. Madhusoodhanan said. An awareness rally, to be attended by nursing school students and those cured of tuberculosis (TB), will be conducted in connection with the inaugural function. District Collector Ishita Roy will inaugurate a TB awareness motorcycle rally on Tuesday, Dr. Madhusoodhanan said. Public meetings and classes on the disease and its cure will be held at Kannapuram, Payyannur, New Mahe, Iritty and Koothuparamba, he said. Dr. Madhusoodhanan said there was delay in diagnosing TB incidence in Adivasi areas in the district. The district was estimated to have 75 TB patients per one lakh population. In 1998 when DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short-course) system was introduced in the district, 354 cases of TB incidence were reported. Over the past decade, 16,722 TB patients had been cured, he said.
