HYDERABAD: Expressing concern over the sky-rocketing prices of essentials, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has announced its decision to launch militant movements across the country to mount pressure on the government to check them.

CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan lamented that the common man was groaning under soaring prices of all essentials.

“The household budget has gone awry,” he said. He was delivering the inaugural address at the party’s 20th national conference that got underway here on Sunday.

Growing anger

Recalling that the CPI had demanded ban on forward trading of essentials and slash in excise duty on crude instead of raising petroleum prices, he said the people’s anger was growing and agitations were breaking out because these steps were not initiated.

Farmers were caught in a pair of scissors with rising costs of inputs and non-remunerative prices for their produce.

Revolutionary Socialist Party general secretary T. J. Chandrachoodan said though the Left parties had some ground for satisfaction for forcing the government to implement certain programmes, they had, however, not succeeded in fully preventing the government from pushing neo-liberal and pro-capitalist economic policies.

Call for unity

All-India Forward Bloc general secretary Debabrata Biswas said the country’s political scenario was at the crossroads throwing a challenge to the Left parties to end capitalist polarisation and this could not be achieved unless “we can forge wider Left unity to form the people’s alternative.”

CPI national secretariat member S. Sudhakar Reddy presided over the inaugural while another senior leader D. Raja welcomed the participants who included representatives from Communist parties of 26 countries.
