Rain plays havoc in Hyderabad

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Death of a student due to electrocution, fallen trees and electric poles, inundated roads and overflowing sewerage marked many areas in the city following the rains for a third consecutive day. The rains lashing for the past three days did not exactly throw life out of gear but caused considerable damage keeping the civic staff on their heels.

A student in Humayunnagar reportedly died due to electrocution. The situation was bad in the old city where lanes and by-lanes had knee deep waters. Localities such as Charminar, Shalibanda, Pahadi Sharif and Chandrayangutta up to Balapur had streets full of swirling waters while overflowing sewerage was common to all places.

Fear of water and manholes kept the public indoors for the best part of the day. Potholes being carried forward since the last monsoons had fresh accruals at many places such as Gachibowli and Himayathnagar. Vehicles had to wade through knee-deep waters near Lingampally Railway Crossing while quite a few low lying areas near Trimulgherry faced the wrath of flood waters.

The situation was no better at Vikrampuri, R.K. Puram and Karkhana. Commuters near the Karkhana bus stop experienced generous splashes from the nearby drainage overflow. Sewerage lines were at their worst near Saroornagar and surrounding areas.

Trees fell down at least at six places and there were reports of fallen electric poles from places such as L.B.Nagar and other areas on the city outskirts. “We received information from a few places about fallen trees blocking the way and a complaint of inundation from Mallapur. All our people are out on the roads checking and clearing the carriageways,” said Narasaraju, an Assistant Engineer from the Central Emergency Cell of the GHMC.

Municipal workers removed tree blockades from areas such as Pathargatti, Vijayanagar Colony, Hyderguda, Punjagutta, and Begumpet, he said. The inundation at Mallapur was cleared and a pump was kept to drain excess water.

Power interruptions and fluctuations which prevailed all over the city up to four to five hours on Friday came down in the last two days. “About 200 feeders tripped on Friday across the city while the number stood at 185 the following day. Breakdowns were relatively less on Sunday,” explained Rajaiah, an Assistant Engineer of Electricity Control Room.

Mains tripped at many offices due to huge fluctuations resulting in shutdown of equipment. Students preparing for SSC exams had to put up with untold hardships due to power interruptions.
