Lorry with pulse consignment gutted
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: ‘Toor dal,’ weighing nearly 39 tonnes, meant for supply under the public distribution system, was destroyed when a lorry transporting the consignment caught fire on the Chennai Bypass at Anakaputhur, a southern suburb of Chennai, early on Sunday.
However, no one was injured, police said.
According to them, the vehicle, bearing the registration number TN 21 R 4852, had left a Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation godown in north Chennai late on Saturday night for Ulunderpettai in Villupuram district. The consignment was meant for fair price shops in the region.
At around 2 a.m., the lorry collided head-on with an earth-moving equipment reported to be travelling in the wrong direction.
The equipment, police said, hit the fuel tank of the pulse-laden lorry. In the impact, diesel from the tank leaked and a fire broke out, destroying the lorry completely.
Fire tenders from Maraimalai Nagar and Tambaram rushed to the spot and put out the flames. But all 510 bags , each weighing 75 kg, were destroyed. The Shankar Nagar police conducted a preliminary investigation and registered a case.
It was then transferred to the Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation).
