1,070 hectare crop damaged

PUDUKOTTAI: Crop on about 1,070 hectares has been destroyed in the recent showers in the district, the Collector, D. Uthirakkumaran, said.

In a release on Sunday, he said that paddy on 650 hectares and the other crops on 420 hectares had been completely destroyed in the recent showers. He also said that roads to the cumulative stretch of 88.71 kilometres and three culverts had been damaged. A total of 59 tiled houses and huts had been damaged. A maximum of 20 huts were damaged in Manmelkudi taluk while 18 huts collapsed in Kulathur taluk.

The district administratio had geared up relief operations to those whose houses or huts were destroyed. Besides a cash relief of Rs.1.18 lakhs, rice, kerosene and saris and dhotis had been distributed.
