TUMKUR: Two thousand and four hundred students will be awarded degrees at the first convocation of Tumkur University here on Monday. O. Anantharamaiah, Vice-Chancellor of the university, told presspersons that in all 21 gold medals would be awarded and 125 students would be given the “rank status”. Dr. Anantharamaiah said the university, founded in 2004, had all its 86 constituent colleges in Tumkur district. He said that after taking office on March 24, 2004, 18 postgraduate departments were opened and he had laid stress on research. The student strength increased to 28,000. Earlier, the district had only 36 colleges with a student strength of 8,000. The colleges were then affiliated to Bangalore University. Dr. Anantharamaiah listed the infrastructure developments during the last three years which included acquisition of a campus site, students’ hostels, state-of-the-art library and laboratories, and recruitment of experienced and qualified faculty members. He said: “A world-class campus will be built. A plan has been drawn up and the Government has been requested to provide Rs. 170 crore for the purpose.” Dr. Anantharamaiah requested the invitees to be seated at the H.M. Gangadharaiah Memorial Hall, the venue of the convocation, by 10 a.m.
