ARIYALUR: The Tamil Nadu Cement Corporation Employees Sammelan, affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress, has urged the Government to take steps to modernise and enhance the production capacity of the Arasu Cements factory here. Expressing surprise over the stoppage of cement supply through stockists to public from the factory at reasonable costs since April 2007, the Sammelan Secretary, T. Dhandapani, said the employees were concerned over the stagnating stocks. Though the entire produce was diverted for government projects initially, the procurement of cement from private companies at higher costs by the District Rural and Development Agency since October 2007 was the main cause for concern, Mr. Dhandapani said, urging the Chief Minister to clear the apprehension caused by the stagnating stocks, scaling down of production and non-filling of vacancies caused by retirement. The cut in production was causing a slide in profit by Rs.1 crore a month. The Government must reconsider its stand on importing and supplying cement procured at controlled rates from private companies through the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation since it was possible for enhancing production capacity at the factory itself owing to the existence of vast mining area, Mr. Dhandapani said in a statement. At a time when giant companies were making a beeline to the district to establish production units, there was no reason why the Arasu Cements factory that has been in existence for 29 years now should not be modernised. Similar to the recruitment drives carried out by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, the vacancies in Arasu Cements must also be filled, Mr. Dhandapani emphasised in a communication to the Chief Minister. Denying the charge that the company was being neglected, official sources said that it was one among the profitable units of the Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation, and that the entire produce was being utilised for Government projects. Cement was being procured from other companies also since the requirement was higher, sources said adding that there was no cause for apprehension over the sustenance of the company.
