THENI: With the water level in Vaigai dam touched 69 feet (total height 72 feet), the Public Works Department has issued third and final warning to five districts in the downstream of the Vagai and released 2,698 cusecs of water in the river on Saturday night. With no cultivation in ayacut areas, water was not released through irrigation canal. At present, the dam has been receiving 5,072 cusecs, thanks to incessant rain in the catchments. (Second flood warning was issued at 3 p.m. on Saturday as the storage level touched 68.5 feet.) With heavy flow in Kottakudi, Vaigai amd Mullaperiyar rivers, inflow to the dam has been increased steadily. Storage level was increasing rapidly in Periyar dam also. Water level touched 124.7 feet. (Total permissible storage 136 feet). However, quantum of rain in Thekkadi and Periyar dam site has come down sharply. Inflow to the dam was reduced to 2,986 cusecs. (Previous day inflow was 6,643 cusecs.) With no discharge for irrigation or for power generation, storage level was increasing steadily towards the permissible level of 136 feet. Even as the rainfall has come down sharply in several areas, the Vaigai dam received the highest rain in the district, pushing Shanmuga Nadhi dam that recorded the highest rain for the past four days, to the third place. Several tanks in Bodi, Theni and Chinnamanur have been overflowing. Ground-level bridge across Mayladumparai-Muthalamparai road was inundated in flash flood on the Varushanadu hills, snapping road connectivity to several villages on the hill. Rain fall recorded at various places in the district in mm: Periyar 12, Thekkadi 11, Goodalur 6, Uthamapalayam 15, Shanmuga Nadhi dam 27, Veerapandi 35 and Vaigai dam 43. DindigulStorage was comfortable in major dams. Athoor dam, lifeline of Dindigul and Chinnalapatti town, has been filling up fast as water level rose to 21 feet which was just 16 feet in first week of March. Sky was overcast in Dindigul and nearby areas. Minor showers were recorded in the town on Saturday night. Several roads were damaged and prices of vegetable were shot up sharply, owing to poor arrival to the whole sale market. Water level rose substantially in all major dams in Palani and other parts of the district. Upper Kodaikanal hill, Naidupuram and observatory areas plunged into darkness, owing to snapping of power cables. Paddy and sunflower crops were affected in Palni taluk.
