Jammu: Forty-year-old Mohammad Mushtaq Bhat is paying the price for his bravery. He lost his father and two daughters in a grenade attack on his house. He, his wife and their three-month-old son are in hospital with grievous injuries. “Not attending the last rites of my father Habibullah Bhat and my daughters will remain the biggest regret of my life,” he says. “And now, I can do little for my boy as I and my wife too are injured.” Bhat was approached by the Hizbul Mujahideen commanders to join them 10 years ago. Offer refusedHe refused the offer and instead opted to fight them. After attempts to shoot him down, militants bribed a villager to lob a grenade on Bhat’s house. Act of cowardice“It is an act of cowardice. If they had the guts they should have challenged me. Why target the unarmed old, women and children?” Bhat told The Hindu at the Government Medical College Hospital.
