Letters to the Editor
The editorial “Taking the stress out of schools” (March 21) has come not a day too soon. It is a pity that the rigid examination pattern has made school education extremely stressful in recent years. Creativity has been subordinated to rote learning and the lofty objective sacrificed at the altar of admission to professional courses. Unless there is a paradigm shift in the course contents, our education system will continue to languish, without preparing students for life beyond the campus. P.K. Varadarajan, Chennai The bane of our education system is that there has been neither long-term planning nor continuous reform over a period of time to assess its impact. Whenever a government changes, there is tinkering in the field of education. It is time we evolved a national policy on education and pursued it before we take up any meaningful reform. V. Rajagopala Rao, Nellore The learning or cramming ability differs from pupil to pupil. It would be therefore apt to replace ‘failure’ with ‘deferred success’ in the educational vocabulary. Even an indolent child learns at his own pace. We need an education system that nurtures children’s creative instincts and recognises all individual attainments. G. David Milton, Maruthancode
