The best will get the chance to perform in the Devadasi national festival of dance

BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to discover the promising Odissi dancers of the State and promote them, Muscat-based non-resident Oriya and Odissi dance promoter A.K. Parija has announced to offer attractive cash awards to the winners of the State-level Odissi dance competition during the forthcoming Naveen Kalakar national Odissi festival for young dancers here next month.

Into its second year, the three-day festival is being hosted by the city-based Devdasi Nrutya Mandir in association with the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya (USM), Orissa’s premiere college of performing arts, from April 27 to 29 at the USM auditorium.

Dancers from abroad

“Naveen Kalakar Odissi dance festival has been modelled after the 46-year-old Kal-ke Kalakar festival of Indian classical dance and music of Mumbai,” explained Devdasi Nrutya Mandir secretary Mr.Jagabandhu Jena.

While the festival would invite young Odissi dancers from India and abroad to participate in it, the competition would be held among the Odissi artistes of Orissa in the age group of 17 to 25.

The best three performers of the competition would be presented cash awards of Rs.10, 000, Rs.5, 000 and Rs.3, 000 respectively by Akshaya Parija Presentations of Muscat that promotes Odissi dance globally,” Mr.Jena informed.

He further announced that the winners would also be offered an opportunity to perform in the third annual Devdasi national dance festival to be organised by the Devdasi Nrutya Mandir in Bhubaneswar in September.

Mr. Parija launched these cash awards last year and has announced to continue it at least for 10 years; he said and added that the participants of the festival who would score marks above 80 per cent would be awarded “Odissi-Jyoti” title.

Application forms for the competition are available at the Orissa Modern Art Gallery at 132, Forest Park here, informed Mr.Jena who can be contacted on mobile number 98610-64198.
