BHUBANESWAR: Former legislator Bibhishan Majhi will be the nominee of the ruling Biju Janata Dal for the byelection for Laxmipur Assembly constituency in Koraput district. The constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Castes, is scheduled to go the polls on April 12. Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik cleared Mr. Majhi’s name as his party’s candidate on his return from New Delhi. Mr. Majhi had won from Laxmipur in the Assembly polls that were held in 2000. In the 2004 Assembly polls, Mr. Majhi was denied the party ticket. The party had then fielded Kamal Lochan Saunta, who was defeated by Anantaram Majhi of the Congress. The byelection was necessitated following the demise of Anantaram Majhi in November last year. The Congress, however, has not announced its candidate so far. According to sources, the party was considering to field one of the family members of the late leader. Former Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang’s son Sisir Gamang was also being considered by the party. As March 26 was the last date for filing of nominations, the Congress was likely to announce the name of its candidate on Monday.
