DINDIGUL: A year-long training, continuous and effective awareness campaign on rights and powers of local bodies and timely guidance for proper administration of local bodies help several women representatives of local bodies in Palani taluk achieve their desired goals in administration and take government schemes to people, mostly in remote villages in time, thanks to a leadership training programme organised under Hunger Project. The results of empowerment of women and community participation are amazing. Now, women representatives of local bodies have eradicated child labour in six panchayats, greening surroundings of two town panchayats and implemented solid waste management in five other panchayats. Hard work, team spirit and perseverance of these women councillors help them rope in community in their struggle for social development. No child labourIn an interaction-cum-experience sharing meeting of women panchayat presidents and ward councillors in Palani recently, women leaders stated that child labour was eradicated in Sivagiripatti, Kavalipatti, Andipatti, Melakottai, Pachalanaickenpatt and Kanakkanpatti panchayats. After effective counselling with rural mothers, SHG member-turned-ward councillor of Sivagiripatti panchayat, Kaliamma, stated that they brought their wards back to school. “Now, we are talking to parents to help their children complete school education without break.” Eswari, vice-panchayat of Melakottai panchayat, had solved six-year-old health problems of the local body. With no drainage facility, residents had been affected by contagious diseases. She was instrumental in construction of drainage canal and its proper maintenance. Clean colonyWith community participation, Subbulakshimi, ward member of Pappampatti panchayat, created a clean Adi Dravida colony and ensured a hygienic atmosphere. Clogging of drainage canal was a big problem. “I sensitised residents on ill-effects of stagnation of drainage canal and directed sanitary workers to clean all canals. Garbage clearance has also been regularised.” Women ward members in Ayakkudi town panchayat took a pledge to make the town green. They planted 13,000 tree saplings last year. Target for this year is 7,000 saplings. Women in Kalayamputhur and Pappampatti too have started following Ayakudi. Vasanthi of A. Kalayamputhur took house patta schemes to people. The CEDA Trust trained 46 women representatives on panchayat raj system in the taluk.
