Rain fury continues

Special Correspondent

Bund breaches and canal overflows

Paddy crops in 63 hectares destroyed

As many as 50 houses damaged

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Intermittent spells of heavy rain that lashed the district since Saturday night flooded low-lying areas and damaged houses and standing crops.

As many as 50 houses were damaged in the heavy showers. Paddy crops in 63 hectares and vegetable farms spread over 55 hectares were destroyed. According to the district administration, 17,4900 banana plants were also damaged at various places.

Estimates prepared by the control room said the heavy downpour had damaged 22 houses in Chirayinkeezh, five in Neyyatinkara, 12 in Thiruvananthapuram and 11 in Nedumangad taluk.

In Thiruvananthapuram taluk, most of the crop loss was caused by the breach of a bund at Kalliyoor. The surging waters from the broken bund inundated vegetable and paddy farms in the downstream areas. The Kanamoola canal overflowed its bank, flooding houses in the bund colony. Ward councillor Satheeshkumar said the residents had refused to shift to a relief camp. “They want the government to start work on the rehabilitation project,” he added. In the Neyyatinkara taluk, the Fire and Rescue Service was pressed into operation to pump out floodwaters from the Karumkulam area near Pulluvila. Five houses were damaged in the Vilappil village.

Waterlogging

Waterlogging was reported from several low-lying areas in the Chirayinkeezh taluk. However, the coastal areas were spared of the heavy erosion witnessed during the last rains.
