Devotees celebrate Easter with special prayer service

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Christians in Kerala celebrated Easter on Sunday with great devotion. Special prayers and services were held in churches to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ after crucifixion.

The intermittent showers that lashed the city did not deter the faithful from turning out in large numbers to attend the ceremonies. Bishops and senior prelates led the services in churches of various Christian denominations.

Easter marks the culmination of the 50-day season of prayer, abstinence and penance. The Catholicos of the Syro Malankara Catholic Church, Mar Baselius Cleemis, and Thiruvananthapuram Archbishop Susaipakiyam of the Latin rite led the prayers in their cathedrals here.

Easter prayers and services were also held in churches of the Malanakara Orthodox, Jacobite and Protestant churches.
