Hyderabad
Hyderabad: It used to be an easy channel for motorists plying across Lallaguda – Tarnaka and Lalapet - Tarnaka routes through railway staff quarters at Mettuguda. But ever since South Central Railway (SCR) authorities installed barricades at several lanes and roads in the quarters, people are having a torrid time, forced to get on to the busy Mettuguda- Tarnaka main road. Serpentine lines of vehicles stuck in traffic jams stretch all the way from Rail Nilayam to Tarnaka - Osmania University Junction and with SCR authorities blocking the passageway through the quarters, motorists woes have only compounded, particularly at the Central Railway Hospital ‘T’ junction. Earlier, SCR authorities installed barricades on the Chandrasekhar Azad Road and Pingalli Venkaiah Roads denying entry for motorists to reach Tarnaka main road from Lallaguda and now recently, they have blocked passage from Shanthinagar and Lalapet end towards Mettuguda, forcing motorists to burn more fuel. Owing to these barricades, transportation within the quarters has also been affected. Delivery boys who supply domestic gas cylinders stop at Tarnaka electric sub-station or on the other side of road, making the residents carry the cylinders all the way from Shantinagar, bemoans Jude Kurral, a resident of South Lallaguda. Denying entry to heavy vehicles into the quarters is very much acceptable but with these barricades even auto-rickshaws and ambulances too are unable to enter the quarters, which is causing untold inconvenience to residents, says W.A Reid, former railways employee. While it would hardly be a half-kilometre journey to reach Lalapet from Mettuguda through the staff quarters, the same would be a 3 km journey, if one happens to take the Tarnaka main road. “After the twin blasts in Hyderabad last year, instructions were passed on to us to block the passage through the quarters in a bid to ensure security for the employees residing in the quarters,” explained a SCR spokesman.
