KOCHI: Easter celebrations in the city were marked by traditional fervour. Thousands of people attended midnight Masses across churches, marking the beginning of the celebrations in which the Christian world evokes the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day of the Crucifixion. At the CSI Immanuel Church on Broadway, celebrations began early on Sunday morning with a solemn Easter Mass. Readings from the Bible and songs of the Resurrection marked the celebrations. The Mass was followed by distribution of Easter eggs to the parishioners. Ceremonies at Ernakulam St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica began with a solemn Mass led by Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil. At the St. Francis Assisi Cathedral, Easter celebrations were led by Archbishop Daniel Acharuparampil. The ceremonies began at 10.30 p.m. on Saturday with the blessing of fire, water and the Pascal candle, renewal of the baptismal vows and a solemn Mass. The Easter celebrations are the culmination of the observance of the Holy Week during which Christians evoke the Passion and the crucifixion of Jesus.
