Automatic parking complexes soon at 21 identified sites

Parking fare at these sites to be geometric, says GHMC Commissioner C.V.S.K. Sarma

HYDERABAD: The GHMC will put in place automatic parking complexes at 21 identified sites and also begin metered parking at designated parking lots in six months to ease traffic congestion.

The Commissioner and Special Officer, C.V.S.K. Sarma, stated this on Friday during a question and answer session while addressing delegates at the Hyderabad IT Summit in the International Conventional Centre at Madhapur. The parking fares would be geometric where the vehicle owner has to pay more for parking the vehicle for more time.

“We have also taken a decision not to permit any new multi-storeyed building whether it is for residential or commercial purpose if adequate parking is not provided. We are also demolishing illegal structures built in space meant for parking,” he said.

Time sought

A CEO’s Club delegate Hari asked the Commissioner if any steps were being taken to tackle parking problem in the capital. “Please bear with us for six months more to sort out the problem,” urged Dr. Sarma, adding that complex infrastructure problems were sought to be tackled with complete solutions now that planners have a clear idea of what has to be done.

He did accept that haphazard parking was a problem and right of way was encroached upon by hawkers and religious structures. At the same time, he made a case for Hyderabad being the most “liveable” place in the country with pleasant climate, potable and dependable water, work on world-class public transport with metro rail/outer ring road, educational institutions, hospitals, satellite townships, etc.

New scheme

The Commissioner appealed to the industry to participate in ‘Fund Your City’ scheme where corporates can adopt a slum, park or any other “new idea” they can come up with. Twin cities was the best place for young IT professionals to work as well as senior citizens to lead a peaceful retired life, he said.

About 1,500 theme parks are being built and 1,800 open spaces have identified for lung spaces. Traffic needs to be regulated but it was far better compared to other cities. Efforts were on to make it a slum free city by either identifying lands for relocating slum dwellers or build 10-storeyed structures in the existing slums with shopping areas, banks and other utilities. “We are also going to have servant apartments in the new housing areas and layouts,” he said.
