HYDERABAD: The government will pay compensation to farmers for the crop loss they suffered during the unseasonal rain which has been lashing different parts of the State for three days. It will also extend input subsidy to them. Orders to this effect were issued by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday. According to an official release, Dr. Reddy said rains had arrived at a time the State was facing a crisis arising out of government having to meet people’s needs -- both domestic and agricultural. The release said reports of crop damage had been received from places hit by rain. The release recalled that the administration had increased the per hectare input subsidy for damaged crops from Rs.1,500 to Rs.4,500. Dr. Reddy noted that thanks to the heavy rain the power consumption had come down by 15 million units a day. It was likely to go up once the wet spell ended. Hence, the government had directed officials to take appropriate steps in tune with the situation.
